Disinfectant programs generally include three categories based on composition and intended use, covering applications from Grade C/D to Grade A/B areas.
Alcohols: 70% isopropyl alcohol, 75% ethanol, and blended alcohols such as n-propanol plus ethanol are ready to use after double sterilizing filtration through 0.22 µm filters. They are mainly used for surface wiping in Grade C/D areas. Blended and sterile alcohol formulations may also be used for routine disinfection of external equipment surfaces and RABS gloves in Grade A/B areas. They are effective against vegetative bacteria and yeasts but are not sporicidal.
Peroxides: 3% and 6% hydrogen peroxide and formulated peroxide products, including sterile sporicidal formulations. Sterile 3% hydrogen peroxide is used in Grade A/B areas, while 6% and formulated peroxide products are used periodically as part of sporicidal rotation programs.
Quaternary ammonium compounds and blended formulations: Formulated quaternary ammonium disinfectants, including sterile and concentrated Type I products, and hand sanitizing gels are used for personnel hand hygiene, material airlocks, and non-critical surfaces in Grade C/D areas. Concentrated products are diluted by the user according to the applicable SOP.
